This year might be a little more intriguing on the men's side. Roger Federer is going for a record breaking sixth straight men's single title, but Raphael Nadal, his nemesis is back. Of course
American hopeful Andy Roddick has returned to try and reclaim the title for the first time since 2003. On the women's side, you have the Williams sisters (Venus and Serena) fighting for the championship, but they won't play against each other in the final, if they get there, because they are in the same bracket due to seeding. Try and take a guess at who is the #1 ranked woman tennis player in the world right now....Russian born Dinara Safina. Safina has won twelve singles titles in her career and is looking for her first major.

I remember staying up late into the night watching 39 year old Jimmy Connors play until 1:30 in the morning back in 1991. I remember watching Pete Sampras, so dehydrated, actually puking on the court in the semi finals and finding a way to get to the finals to beat Michael Chang (yea, you remember him) in 1996. I remember a young S
teffi Graph (anyone remember that SI picture from 1990?) beating Gabriella Sabatini in 1988 to win the first complete grand slam in women's tennis since 1970. Tennis has fallen down the sports totem pole so far and I really hope that this U.S. Open gives us a great story to follow and a reason to stay up way too late on a Tuesday night, listening to the airplanes land at LaGuardia. Please, someone give us that reason to be excited about tennis again!

I'm not a hater, but there is nothing out there that could get me excited about tennis. No offense to the spors. Sometimes if there is absolutely nothing on, I'll watch it for a while and be entertained so some degree. But let's face it... it doesn't come close to the NFL, NCAA, MLB, NBA or NHL. Heck, I might even watch golf first!
ReplyDeleteDon't you hate when you type out a totally great comment and your computer f's it up and you have to start over. DAMN. All I really have to say is Tennis needs something great to happen. Hopefully Nadal will win this title. That will make my mother in law smile! She loves that guy! Good Luck Nadal, i'll see your highlights on sportcenter!!!
ReplyDeleteSOMETHING TO WATCH FOR?!?!?! ARE YOU PEOPLE SERIOUS??? Has no one bothered to watch the last two men's singles finals of Wimbeldon? Nadal vs. Federer in '08 was unbelievalbe, and yet that somehow took second stage to the men's final this year between Federer and Roddick. Hopefully these ridiculous matches can cary over into the U.S. open to give americans "something to watch for."
ReplyDeleteI am just as guilty as everyone else that has bailed on tennis. I used to love watching and playing it and now it is really an after thought for me. I am going to try my best to watch the U.S. Open this year, but the Yanks better not be on at the same time!
